"Reconsecrating Urban Space: Lessons from Renaming New Orleans Streets" Lecture
Update: The Zoom recording of the "Reconsecrating Urban Space" lecture is now available. A transcript is also available for download.
Please join the LSU Ethics Institute for a lecture from Thomas Adams and Sue Mobley on "Reconsecrating Urban Space: Lessons from Renaming New Orleans Streets."
Since July, Sue Mobley and Thomas Adams have chaired the Panel of Experts for the New Orleans Street Renaming Commission. In this talk, they discuss the New Orleans Street renaming process and its origins as a potential model for other places and institutions that are seeking to remove vestiges of Lost Cause, Confederate and white supremacist memorialization. While detailing the process in New Orleans and its challenges they also discuss how efforts there can provide lessons - good and bad - for other contexts including in relationship to political opposition as well as urban planning issues like eponym rededication and the splitting of street names.
This event will take place on Thursday, March 4th from 12 - 1 pm. You can join the Zoom room with the code 928 0145 3794 and passcode 980320. Please e-mail us at ethics@lsu.edu with any questions or concerns.
