Brief Biography

Catherine “Kelly” Moon completed her PhD in Social Work at the University of Maryland School of Social Work in 2018. Her dissertation, titled Neighborhood and Cumulative Ecological Risk: Predicting Physical Abuse and Neglect in an Urban Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN) Sample, examines how neighborhood structure and process contribute to child maltreatment risk.

After obtaining her MSW from the University of South Carolina, Kelly engaged in direct practice for several years as an advocate for children and families at risk for child maltreatment and as a director of maltreatment prevention programs. Prior to obtaining a PhD, Kelly worked for The Pennsylvania State University as an Instructor in Human Development and Family Studies and as a Research Associate for the Prevention Research Center where she evaluated early childhood programs. She continued her intervention research agenda, specifically tailoring parenting interventions & child maltreatment prevention programs to serve underrepresented communities and contexts as Lead Research Specialist at

The Ruth Young Center for Families and Children. She looks forward to building collaborative relationships in Louisiana. Kelly, as most people call her, is a shortened version of her Catherine, which she readily admits causes much confusion and will happily answer to either name. She resides with her spouse, two children, and as many rescued senior pugs as her family and space will allow. Kelly is currently owned by Ruby, an eleven-year-old blind/deaf pug who can put any Diva to shame.
